We have provided in depth peer-to-peer recovery support services since 1999. By "peer-to-peer" we mean that our case managers are former heroin addicts who spent years struggling with a system which did not appear to have much compassion for those suffering from opioid addiction. We do our very best to treat those who come to us for help with the respect and compassion they very much need and deserve.

Unfortunately, the State of Vermont has few methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) facilities currently available.  A clinic was opened in Burlington (Chittenden Center) but it filled to capacity immediately and has remained that way. Currently (November, 2006) we have mobile methadone vans operating in St. Johnsbury and Newport, Vt.

A new clinic, operated by Habit Management (HMI) is to open a Southern Vermont facility in Brattleboro. December 1, 2006 is the targeted date for opening.

HMI has adopted oral swab collection for testing their patients for the use of unauthorized drugs. The patient's inner cheek is swabbed with a cotton-like collector and this is sent to a lab for testing. We compliment HMI for using this very accurate but far less humiliating technique for the testing of unauthorized drug use. To our knowledge, HMI is the only methadone clinic in the area which does not require urine testing.

The nearest out-of-state clinics are in Greenfield, Massachusetts and Lebanon, New Hampshire. Usually there are treatment slots available at these out-of-state sites.

Don't forget there's a new drug for medication-assisted treatment of opiate addiction: buprenorphine. There are buprenorphine providers in Vermont but finding an open treatment slot in your area might be difficult. We are usually able to find treatment for those who need it. This treatment may be ideal for your situation.
